Maintaining an Oakwood Table

Oaks can produce strong and beautiful wood that can be used for a variety of cultural artifacts and furniture. Oak is much stronger than other types of woods and it can look beautiful for decades if it is kept properly. There are some basic steps that should be implemented when caring for oak wood to keep it looking great for years to come.

Be careful about what touches the surface of the wood. The majority of damages to oak tables come from dirty, corrosive, or hot objects being placed directly on the surface. Although this damage can be treated by redoing the finish layer, the best treatment is prevention. If you regularly eat on the table, use coasters for holding cups and placemats to prevent oily food from falling on the surface.

Clean oak tables often. Cleaning this type of table desk is fairly simple, but be careful not to soak the cloth with water. Moisten a soft cloth with mineral spirits or furniture cleaner, do not use hard soaps. Simply rubbing the table should be enough to get rid of dusts, dirt, and some simple stains. Oak should be cleaned with furniture cleansers about once a month.

If you see a stain, treat it as soon as possible. Although a stain may look permanent, it is possible to get rid of it with the right treatments. The sooner you treat the stain, the easier it will be to come off. Use a mineral spirit and cloth to scrub the stain off. If the mark is especially stubborn, try dampening your cloth with oil to remove the spot.

Watermarks and burns are the most common damage that can be found on dining tables. Some watermarks will leave a white ring that will disappear over time. However, if the table is soaked too often it will cause the white color to stay permanently. The best way to avoid these stains is to treat them right after they occur.

If your table has marks that will not come off with cloths or cleansers, you may need to redo the varnish layer. This is a time consuming process that requires a furniture specialist. Although you can do the job at home, you will need basic experience in sanding at woodwork. Removing and replacing the finish layer will get rid of almost any stain unless it has soaked into the wood.
